Our

History

C.E. Fuller & Co.’s origins can be traced back to 1868 when local builder, carpenter and wheelwright George Shaw offered undertaking services from the Hall Street premises. In the early 20th century, the company changed hands to Cecil Fuller and Herbert Johnson and became known as Fuller and Johnson.

Following the death of Herbert Johnson in February 1938, the partnership was dissolved and the company was taken over by Ernest Fuller’s son, Cecil, who traded as Cecil E. Fuller. Soon Cecil was adept at offering cremation as an option instead of the more traditional burial.

When Cecil retired in 1964, Reg Brown, his son-in-law, took over the business, assisted by his wife Anita, their son Tony and daughter in law Marie.  The name was changed to C. E. Fuller & Co. and the company slowly withdrew from building work to focus solely on funerals. 

Reg’s son, Tony, passed away at a young age and Reg died a few years later, leaving Marie to run the business, assisted by their small team.

In 2023, the company partnered with independent family-owned funeral directors, Peasgood & Skeates, which has branches in Cambridge, Duxford, Haverhill, Sawston and Saffron Walden.

The name of C.E. Fuller & Co. has been retained in Soham out of respect for the high esteem in which the Fuller family were held.
